Going back to shape

TLDR: Had a wonderfully nerdy time lately. It's not healthy. Going back to sleep enough, working out and eating clean. Hopefully still finding time to work on the new projects.

Now for the patient:

In the beginning of 2026 I joined a new gym.

I wasn't as out of shape as I am now, but I had found a time slot between dropping my kid in kindergarten and having to check-in at work. And also a nice gym on the way!

I trained well for around two months, the gym was indeed nice - old school style, not too crowded, rock music... I even found a friend who I hadn't seen in a long time, training there!

Then, in the beginning of March, they closed for a total renovation. It should have lasted 2 weeks, but it ended up lasting 6.

This is when, one morning, I had the idea to start this website. My own little corner of the web. But it didn't stop there. Going all in on a geek personal project at lightning speed, now superpowered by AI, actually made my love for computers reignite quite a bit! At the same time I started playing with electronics and started another semi-serious project that I'll share one day! And retro-computing! (I need to make a page here about my new old Compaq Desktop Pentium III and how I had to adapt a new power supply, etc.)

Anyway, I have found that building and learning with AI can become extremely addictive. But you don't feel guilt as you'd feel when, say, doomscrolling on YT or IG, because you're actually learning and/or building stuff! It is actually quite amazing for subjects about which you know some fair amount about, but have gaps you'd like to fill in!

Nevertheless, I have experienced a new type of effect from using a computer. The AI can give you an endless stream of information and help that is extremely relevant to you since it's so personalized. It literally gets to know you and understands your needs. That can get you wired and tired at the same time in a new way, I feel. I was staying up all night, too many times these past months!

Some years ago I was happily shutting down devices and going to sleep anywhere between 10pm and midnight, working out in the morning before work, and even developed a deep feeling of mild dislike for computers. Not because I don't like them, I grew up with them! But because I felt in my body and mind how unhealthy it is to sit down for so long, to look for hours and hours at the screen at always the same distance to your eyes, to live entire days where most of the movement of your hands and arms are these super repetitive mouse and keyboard movements. And I learned these things by feeling the opposite way! It's one thing to read about them, but it's another to FEEL different. More energy than ever, more muscle than ever, less nagging pains than ever, just overall healthier and happier than ever!

So, what now? I have started projects that I want to continue developing. But I have to learn, and it's tougher in the age of AI, to slow down. To plan time-slots for activities and enjoy them then. To remember how I felt before and do the things that make me healthy first. Then use the extra energy to work on the extra projects.

In short, I had learned beautiful balance - my amazing network of inter-feeding healthy habits. Sleeping enough and early, working out, eating clean, cooked foods, catching enough son and fresh air, and the list goes on and on. And it did not feel like an effort anymore. Then this fast-changing world threw me off-balance. Some of the events that did were less than pleasant, but some were amazing, like… having a child! Meaning not only "bad" events throw us off-balance.

It's our job to frequently slow down and find it again.

P.S. - As my luso-ukrainian son would say: Davai balansuvaty!
